Wasps can turn a summer garden or loft space into a stressful hazard. While they play a role in nature, nobody wants them nesting in their home. The key is to act early and safely.
Here’s what you need to know about how to get rid of wasps, when to call in the professionals, and what not to do.

1. Understand Wasp Behaviour
Wasps become more aggressive in late summer, especially when food is scarce. They build nests in roof spaces, wall cavities, sheds, trees, and even underground. One nest can hold thousands of wasps by peak season.
2. Never Try to Destroy a Nest Yourself
It’s tempting to spray a nest or knock it down, but this is extremely dangerous. Wasps will defend their colony and can sting repeatedly. Multiple stings can cause allergic reactions, especially in enclosed spaces like lofts.
3. Look for Signs of Nesting
Regular wasp activity in one spot (roof tiles, air bricks, tree trunk, shed roof)
A soft scratching or buzzing sound inside walls or ceilings
Visible nest structure (paper-like material, often grey or beige)
4. Keep Food Sources Covered
Wasps are drawn to sweet smells and protein. To reduce attraction:
Cover bins and compost heaps
Clean up fallen fruit
Avoid leaving food and drink outside uncovered
5. Use Wasp Deterrents - With Caution
Wasp traps and deterrent sprays can be moderately effective but won’t eliminate a colony. Avoid sprays near active nests unless you are trained and protected.
6. Call a Professional for Nest Removal
A licensed pest control technician will:
Locate and assess the nest
Apply safe, regulated insecticide treatment
Remove or neutralise the nest depending on location
GEM Services provides fast, insured wasp nest removal across Ashford and Kent, with same-day response available.
