Signs you have cockroaches
Catching the problem early decides how much of it there is to treat. These are what we look for on arrival, and what is worth checking before you call.
Live cockroaches at night
Switch on the kitchen light at night. Cockroaches scatter when exposed to light. If you see even one, there are almost certainly many more hidden nearby.
Dark smear marks along edges
Cockroaches leave dark, irregular smear marks where they travel along walls, corners, and where surfaces meet. These are most visible on light-coloured surfaces.
Egg cases (oothecae) in hidden areas
Brown, capsule-shaped egg cases about 8mm long are found in crevices, behind appliances, and in cupboard corners. Each case holds dozens of eggs.
Musty, unpleasant odour

A single cockroach sighting outdoors, away from the building and with none of the signs above, is usually not an infestation and does not need a treatment. Work through the prevention points first and see whether the activity continues.
Where this does need acting on quickly is anything indoors, anything near a doorway or a room in daily use, and any sign of an established nest or colony. Cockroaches problems of that kind get harder and more expensive the longer they run.
